About Prof Mason

Prof Mason qualified with commendation from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff and completed his orthopaedic training in Wales. He then moved to Liverpool, where he holds a consultant post in major trauma and foot and ankle surgery at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His private practice is at Spire Liverpool Hospital and on the Isle of Man.

Before his consultant appointment he completed British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) travelling fellowships at the University of Utah, USA, and the Carl Gustav Carus University in Dresden, Germany, and was awarded the BOFAS Gold Fellowship for his foot and ankle fellowship in Liverpool.

Bunions and toe deformity, including minimally invasive (keyhole) correction, which he has performed for around ten years
Heel pain: plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon problems. He has led a specialist heel pain referral clinic for around a decade.
Arthritis of the big toe, midfoot, hindfoot and ankle
Ankle instability and sports injuries, including ankle arthroscopy

Prof Mason is a respected national and international educator, being an invited faculty and speaker for courses by the British Orthopaedic Association, Royal College of Surgeons, AO, Royal Society of Medicine, British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and many more. Prof Mason teaches across the UK both in person and virtually, and is a regular invitee to talk in the USA, Sweden, Canada and India. Prof Mason, and his team, have over 200 research presentations to learned societies.

Publications

Prof Mason has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in many aspects of foot and ankle surgery. In addition, Prof Mason has written a book and over 10 book chapters.

Research

Prof Mason's research spans clinical outcomes, foot and ankle anatomy, biomechanics and national audit. He is co-originator of the Mason and Molloy classification of posterior malleolar ankle fractures, now used internationally, and has described the surgical safe zones of the ankle, the evolution of the human foot, and a previously undescribed ligament of the foot. He led national collaborative audits including UK-FATE (blood clots after foot and ankle surgery).

Prizes and awards

Prof Mason's pioneering research has become nationally and internationally recognised, winning over 30 regional, national and international prizes in the last 10 years. He has been awarded the Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2020 for his work on ankle fractures, the Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize in 2017 for his work on the evolution of the foot, and the Jacques Duparc Prize from EFORT for his work on the discovery of a new foot ligament.
